SEC Predictions and Commentary

Previous Week Overview: The dream lives on for Alabama and anyone who had the insight to predict them as SEC champs in August. Last week Tennessee came to Tuscaloosa and learned that the karma is with the Tide this season. A fumble out of the end zone started it and the Bama kicker ended it as Alabama took full control of the SEC West division. They now have two relatively easy games and should be 9-0 as they once again are at home when LSU comes to town. A win here could very well clinch the West and a spot in the title game.

In other action, SEC East leader Georgia suffered a serious blow to its title hopes when star QB Shockley was knocked out of action during a tougher than expected battle with Arkansas. This is bad news for the upcoming week when Florida takes on the Bulldogs in The Cocktail Party. But its good news as Shockley will reportedly be ready for action to take on Auburn. With Georgia holding a 2 game lead in the division don't be surprised if the Gators take a bite out of that lead this week as they are the only team left with a chance and Georgia has a game they can still lose.

This Weeks Action: (All times Eastern)

Game Of The Week
3:30 PM #4 Georgia at #16 Florida:
This is Florida's last hope and I expect them to come out flying very high. Georgia has its back to the wall in this one with Shockley sitting out and everything points to a Florida win here. Expect Georgia to have trouble with a very good Florida defense and look for the Gators to do just enough on offense to get the win here.

Florida 16
Georgia 10

Conference Matchups
12:30 PM Mississippi at #19 Auburn:
Auburn showed some positives in their battle with LSU last week mainly the emergence of RB Kenny Irons who rushed for 218 yards. Expect the Tigers to be a lot more successful point wise this week against a Mississippi team that couldn't get anything going against sieve like Kentucky. The Auburn defense should put the clamps down this week.

Mississippi 3
Auburn 37

7:00 PM Mississippi St. at Kentucky:
A battle of bottom feeders takes place this week in Lexington as Mississippi State comes to town. Somebody is going to get its first conference win here. The question is "Who?". I flipped a coin and the winner is Kentucky. They actually showed some life last week against Ole Miss while Mississippi State came up flat at home against lightweight Houston. With Kentucky get home field the nod goes to the Cats.

Mississippi St 21
Kentucky 24

7:45 PM South Carolina at #23 Tennessee:
The overrated Vols are ranked 23rd this week. Huh? By whom? Not anyone I am associated with that's for sure. I called them the most overrated team in preseason and at 3-3 they are right on course. This week's contest should be an entertaining one with Spurrier's Gamecocks coming to town. Expect this to be a somewhat high scoring affair as Carolina seems to have gotten some offense together the last couple of games. But in the end the home team Vols will pull it out.

S. Carolina 28
Tennessee 31

Non-Conference Matchups
3:00 PM Utah State at #5 Alabama:
The schedule makers were kind to Bama this year, a fact that did not escape this prognosticator. This week they scrimmage against Utah State and desperately look for someone to replace game breaker Prothro. The last 2 weeks have not gone well for the Tide offense and if they can't get something together this week they are in serious trouble down the road. But look for Bama to get its scoring punch back and with some luck find a new game breaker.

Utah State 14
Alabama 45

8:00 PM North Texas at #7 LSU:
The hurricane make up game takes place this week for LSU as the Sept 3rd battle with North Texas is finally here. It's a good break for LSU as this year's version of North Texas football has been completely obliterated outside of Sun Belt play. Look for LSU to score early and often and then let up completely in the 2nd half. I fully expect a 50 spot to be posted on the board by half time.

North Texas 7
Arkansas 62

Team Of The Week

Week 1 Wyoming +24 over Florida Win
Week 2 Arizona State -1 over LSU Loss
Week 3 Tennessee +6 over Florida Loss
Week 4 Tennessee +7 over LSU Win
Week 5 South Carolina +14 over Auburn Loss
Week 6 LSU -16 over Vanderbilt Win
Week 7 Florida +6 over LSU Win
Week 8 Bye Week

An unexpected bye week came last week as I was forced to sit it out. But I am happy to report a winning 4-3 record heading into week 9 with hopefully some steam behind it. This week I confidently go forward with The University of Auburn Tigers giving 20 to hapless Mississippi. Auburn had many a chance to take last weeks game against LSU and found a new star running back in the process. Meanwhile, Ole Miss floundered around with anemic Kentucky managing only 13 points at home. The Auburn D will completely shut down the Rebels at home and the offense won't need a kick as all its scores will be touchdowns this week.
