With the comment, "The university has made a decision to change head coaches for our football program," Athletic Director Paul Dee informed the media that Coach Coker had been terminated at Miami. He will be retained to finish the season and a bowl game should Miami be invited.

Despite winning more games in his first six seasons than any Head Coach in Miami history except Dennis Erickson, and topping the records of all but five Head Coaches nationwide since 2001, a dismal performance this year and on and off the field altercations lead to his demise.

Dee went on to explain, "There were a lot of issues, but certainly the direction the program was going was certainly one. I wouldn't say that was totally it, but if you want to look in that direction, that was one. There were disappointments. There were opportunities, I think, to play better and we didn't. It all comes to the head coach."

Various names have been bantered about to replace Coker including former Wisconsin Head Coach Barry Alvarez, current South Carolina Head Coach Steve Spurrier, and current Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano.
