Top Five College Football Predictions for 2006-07
5. The ACC will rise again - I'm not sure whether FSU or Miami will win this Labor Day weekend game, but whoever does will shortly find themselves in the top five and is my Dark Horse for the National Championship game... I think the Noles have finally shaken the Ghost of Chris Rix and if Lil' Bowden (Jeff for the uninitiated) can actually pull his head from his ass long enough to make some decent play calls Weatherford should materialize into a very capable QB.
Alternatively, if Miami dumps the Noles, and can survive a potential landmine at GT in late October I look for them to have a second game against FSU in the ACC Championship. Wright has developed into a solid signal caller for the Canes and if Moss can come back off his injury the other pieces are in place for a run at the crown. Kicker Jon Peattie ads a special teams edge to Miami that often determines games between the Canes and Noles....
4. No one will be undefeated out of the Big East - Mountaineer and L'Ville fans please avoid sending me hate mail... I hate reading it and responding only to have you go silent.... if you want to talk about my commentary, drop by the college football message boards and I'll be happy to carry on the smack there.... That said.... I think both the big dogs in the Big East are going to stumble.... I agree they have enough talent and a favorable enough schedule to run the table.... but I just don't see it happening.... here's why...
First things first... WVU and L'Ville play each other... so technically only one could go undefeated....
If WVU tops the Cards' and are undefeated at that point (assuming they didn't blow it against Maryland), they have a tough "Backyard Brawl" against Pitt, and then face two foes in USF and Rutgers who both have enough talent to beat the Mountaineers if they find themselves looking ahead to a BCS Championship game before they finish the season....
If Louisville makes it through WVU unscathed, they also have back to back to back tough weekends in games at Rutgers, home against USF, and at Pitt to close the season before welcoming UConn for the final game. L'Ville has the talent to best all three, but closing in on a BCS game and keeping your eyes on the prize are often easier said than done....
3. The top three Heisman vote getters this year will be -Brian Brohm, Kenny Irons, and Chad Henne...
So sure this is way out on a limb but that’s what prognostication is for.... here's how....
Brohm is leading one of the best offenses in the country through one of the worst conferences.... he should put up insane numbers and roll L'Ville to a shot at a BCS Title....
Irons is a stud RB on a team that loves the run.... The Tigers have a great shot at capturing the SEC and if they do Irons is getting the accolades....
Henne needs to have a big year with Big Blue but with a healthy Hart in the backfield the pressure will be much less on the signal caller.... The Wolverines will win 10 games and Henne will be sitting in New York....
2. Texas Tech will win the Big Twelve - Here's a doozy.... attention Texas and OU fans... see above regarding L'Ville and WVU regarding hate mail.... thanks.... lol...
Anyway, to the prognostication.... Texas and OU are vulnerable this year with inexperience under center... as is TTU... but TTU throws a Sophomore into a system virtually devised to insure success while the QBs at OU and UT have much more to adapt to.... further, Harrell has some minimal experience running the offense and was a very highly touted recruit before coming to TTU....
On the flip side of the ball, Texas and OU may have a bit more strength defensively, but the Red Raiders have improved in that category giving up only 18ppg LY, while putting together a very solid DL and LB core for this year... if the young secondary can mature... I give the Red Raiders a great shot to steal the glory in the Big Twelve....
And the Very Best, Number One, Wild and Off the Wall, Prognostication for the 2006-07 College Football Season is...
1. USC Will Watch the Wheels Fall Off... - Oh hell yes.... this will definitely bring the hate mail.... lol....
The Trojans are a good team.... and the last several years any criticism has be generally indefensible... but this season, the Boys of Troy, are not made of steel.....
Losses of Bush, Leinart, White, and lesser knowns (overall 11 Trojans drafted LY) will take a toll on the Trojans as will a schedule which pits them against a slate that isn’t exactly a cakewalk....
USC should survive a trip to SEC Country for a rematch against Arkansas as the Hogs will be without RB Darren McFadden... but with only 4 starters back on Offense, the Trojans won’t be nearly as potent .... and facing a team with 9 back on defense, this is no walk in the park....
After the trip to the hot and sticky south the Trojans get to return to the Coliseum to face Nebraska.... this one is also another potential landmine as NU is turning into a respectable program and is probably the best team in the Big Twelve North....
After rough weeks one and two, USC is confronted with two road games from emerging Pac-Ten teams looking for respect in their own right.... I don’t know if Arizona or Wazzou will have enough to down the Trojans, but after that opening four game slate I’d be amazed if USC doesn’t have one loss, and not terribly surprised if they had two.....
The Boys from Troy then get into the bulk of the schedule with Washington, ASU, at Oregon St, and at Stanford.... the only spot there that should present a problem is ASU, so USC might be able to right the shaky ship....
Unfortunately for USC, the end of the season is jam packed with potential disasters and games against Oregon, Cal, Notre Dame, and at UCLA could all be brutal.... since I went out on a limb earlier and said that the wheels would come off... here’s where I stick to my guns....
After starting the season 2-2, the Trojans will run off five victories to get to bowl eligibility, and then drop two of three to finish a mediocre 8-4. This might not be the and of the world for some programs.... but with the way the Trojans have dominated the college football scene the last few years... this represents a major blow..... and will not be looked upon favorable in the City of Angels....
Until next time.... feel free to send your hate to the college football message boards and I’ll be happy to offer up a retort.....
