| Pac-10 Week 5 Game Previews and Picks By Derek Wong Pac-10 Correspondent Sep 27, 2007 - 4:29:09 PM |
This is the best game in the Pac-10 this week as these two high-scoring teams will collide in Eugene. Cal has not won in Eugene in 20 years. This game has all the makings of a shootout since both teams have powerful offenses with many playmakers. The edge here goes to Oregon as they are at home and QB Nate Longshore does not play as well on the road as he does at home.
Oregon 41 Cal 38
UCLA vs Oregon State
Which UCLA team will show up? The team that played well at home against Washington last week or the team that stunk it up against Utah two weeks ago? QB Ben Olson will start for the Bruins and his backup will be a walk-on as last week's starter, Pat Cowan, is injured. Oregon State should focus on stopping the running backs of UCLA and make Olson pass. UCLA has a good defense even though they gave up 44 points to Utah. QB Sean Canfield will have to be careful with the football and RB Yvenson Bernard must have a good game for the Beavers to win.
I look for UCLA to come out on top with their running game and defense.
UCLA 23 Oregon State 17
USC vs Washington
USC is too talented and has too much depth for the Huskies. QB Jake Locker will experience more freshman growing pains this week.
USC 38 Washington 17
Washington State vs Arizona
The Cougars have a good chance for the upset this week in Tucson. Arizona is a team in disarray and their defense is giving up too many points in every game this season. Arizona will be starting a freshman at running back as Nicolas Grigsby gets a start. For the Wildcats to win, they must stop QB Alex Brink. I will go with Arizona here as they are at home and will play hard. Although they lost to Cal last week, the offense showed some positive signs.
Arizona 31 Washington State 27
Arizona State vs Stanford
Stanford scored 31 points in the first half last week against Oregon but did not score after halftime. They must learn to play four quarters of football and play to win instead of playing just to be competitive. They have health concerns as some of their starters on both sides of the ball will be out of the game including Allen Smith, their talented left tackle. Arizona State will have too much offense for Stanford. QB Rudy Carpenter is playing very well.
Arizona State 34 Stanford 20
