With a tumultuous college football season throwing a huge stick in the standings and potentially causing the BCS to be short of teams to fill its bowls based on current rules, the commissioners of the six BCS conferences met on Monday and agreed to announce a plan to expand to the top 18 teams to fill out the bowls games.
The new rule, expanding the pool of eligible teams, only goes into effect if the current pool of 14 teams will not be enough to fill the alloted at-large slots in the BCS bowls. The commisioners said they wanted to change the rules as little as possible and expanding the potential qualified teams seemed a less dramatic change than allowing any conference more than two teams.
Regardless of the tweaks, this new adjustment is just another indication that the BCS system is inherently flawed. After years of tweaks and adjustments, the commissioners would still have you believe this is the best we can do and a playoff isn't necessary. Frankly, AgainstTheLine.com disagrees, and we'll make sure to include our opinion in every "News Story" about the crummy system college football currently operates under.
