2009 College Football Wrap Up and 2010 Preview

 By Sean Eilertson

For some college football fans this is the time of the year to look back at what our teams have accomplished and for others, it is a time to look towards next year. In the BCS bowls we saw it was the underdogs who surprised everyone as Ohio State took the victory over Oregon in the Rose Bowl, Iowa completely outplayed Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl and the Boise State Smurfs (I mean Broncos) dominated TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. The Sugar Bowl was the exception as Tim Tebow led the Gators to victory in his last game over the undefeated Cincinnati Bearcats. Colt McCoy finally led his team to the national championship game only to be taken out due to a shoulder injury in the first quarter. While the freshman quarterback for Texas, Garrett Gilbert, almost brought his team back to win the game, the “Bama” defense was too strong and forced a late fumble thus ending any chance Texas had. The Alabama Crimson Tide proved that they were the best team on both sides of the ball and secured yet another national title for the SEC.

For those of you ready for the kickoff to the 2010 college football season, here are my rankings:

 Alabama Crimson Tide

Although Alabama will lose a fair share of starters on defense, they will retain their most important players on offense in Mark Ingram and Julio Jones.

Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes finally ended their BCS skid by topping the Ducks in the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes somehow retained their top man on defense in Cameron Heyward as well as securing juniors Chimde Chekwa and Ross Homan. Look to see a mixture of Terelle Pryor and a talent packed group of running backs make a run to the national title.

Oregon Ducks

Oregon couldn’t take home a Rose Bowl victory but they will be returning nearly the same team. With quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and running back LaMichael James growing in strength and knowledge, the Oregon Ducks are undoubtedly a top team this season.

Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers were one of the younger teams last season and still put together a great season which was capped off with a victory over the Miami Hurricanes. They will be returning nearly all of their top players and they play “smash mouth” football.

Iowa Hawkeyes

The fifth spot in my rankings was a tough one to fill. There are a lot of questions to be answered about next season such as will Florida be Florida? Will Texas reload? Is Boise State for real? Anyways my fifth spot goes to the Hawkeyes because of their will to win. There will be a few gaps to fill such as tackles Bryan Buluga and Kyle Calloway, but I am confident that Kirk Ferentz will field a team that can compete for the Big Ten Title and maybe even a national title.
